Land Park Criterium

Land Park Criterium happened this Sunday in Sacramento. We had several of our juniors race in both the kids races (ages 9-13) and the juniors races (USAC licensed ages 10-18).

In the kis race, Robbie was the outright winner of the kids race. Bowen and Stuart both looked very strong. Sophia crashed on the wet roads in one of the sharp left hand turns. She got up with some minor scraps and finished strong. Perspective member, Nye (11 y/o) also looked great.

In the USAC juniors race, Stefan and Robbie both rode strong. Robbie was probably the youngest out there, but rode fantastic. Stefan pressed hard but was not able to work with anyone. Perspective member, Cayton, (13 y/o) looked impressive.

Local cyclist Sophia Fuller has big day on the bike

Accomplishment: Lodi cyclist Sophia Fuller, a sixth-grader at Vinewood Elementary School, took first place in the girls 10-12 division and captured the yellow jersey at the Davis Junior Criterium on Sunday.

The race was held on the same track that professional riders, including Lance Armstrong, competed on earlier Sunday in Stage 1 of the Tour of California. Fuller, 12, races for Rocket Sports-Trek.

Family: Robert and Carolyn Fuller, parents; two brothers.

Favorite sport: Triathlons. "I really enjoy swimming, I'm good at bike riding and I'm a pretty good runner," said Fuller, who added that she started swimming when she was 2 years old and was riding a bike without training wheels when she was 3.

Favorite athlete: Professional cyclist Chris Horner. Fuller said she met Horner during last year's Tour of California and he provided her with riding tips."He's also a very good racer," Fuller said.

Favorite hobbies: When she's not biking, swimming or running, Fuller said she enjoys reading. She's recently been into fantasy stories, especially the "Artemis Fowl" series by author Eoin Colfer.

Favorite subject: History. "I like learning about wars and how things came to be," Fuller said.

Would like to meet: Lance Armstrong. Fuller said she would like to get some training tips from Armstrong and take a ride with him.

Crowning achievement: Winning last Sunday's race.

Favorite food: Hamburgers. Fuller said her mom's hamburgers are good and she also likes to eat at In-N-Out Burger.

Plans: To do well in middle school and win a few more races.

Lodi's Sophia Fuller not only got to race on a track that previously had the Tour of California Peloton cruising on it, but also earned her very own yellow jersey on a cold and rainy afternoon on Sunday.Racing in the Davis Junior Criterium, a circuit race held in Davis after the Tour of California riders left the city to start Stage 1 of their race, Fuller won the girls 10-12 division. Fuller, a member of the Rocket Sports Racing team, was awarded her race's yellow jersey for the win.Clements' Jon Christensen led the boys Rocket Sports racers, taking second in the boys 10-12 race. In the same division, Robert Terra, of Lodi, followed in third, Stockton's Robbie Ferrens took fifth and Stuart Fuller, of Lodi, came in ninth.In the boys 13-14 competition, Acampo's Joshua LaCelle took eighth and Lodi's Stefan Fuller placed 13th. Abigail Christensen, of Clements, finished fourth in the girls 15-16 race.

Applying for a 2009 USA Triathlon License

Hi Rocket Sports Families,
To apply for a USA Triathlon license, the easiest thing to do is apply for it and pay online. They give juniors a discounted fee of just $5.
You can apply online or print out a USA Triathlon application at this address:

With USA Triathlon there is no place to state team name, so don't worry about it on the application. But please DO inform the coaches and officers of your child's USA Triathlon license number. We have to report a USA Triathlon Membership roster to USAT, and this may help us get junior devo grants from them.
Last thing, just to be clear..... You cannot race a USA Cycling event with a USA Triathlon license, and visa-versa. Additionally, several local triathlons do NOT require a junior to be licensed to race. HOWEVER, to be on our racing team, your child has to hold at least one of these licenses (for club liability reasons). Many of us have our kids have both, since they race both.

How to Apply for a 2009 USA Cycling Race License

Hi Rocket Sports Families,
I just sent off in the mail today our club's 2009 Club Renewal to USA Cycling. For the parents that are going to get USA Cycling race licenses for your kids, if you have not gotten a license yet, wait about a week for USA Cycling to process our club's renewal. Also, while buying a USA Cycling license do not bother to purchase it on line. For juniors it takes a signed parent consent before the process it, so just download the form, print it out, and mail it in (this takes about a 2 weeks). If you wanted to race before getting the license back, "most" promoters will let you slide if you have a photo copy of the check and application (check with the promoter BEFORE showing up to the race to confirm this.

On line 15 of the application it asks for our club name. Please use "Rocket Sports Racing" This is our "official" name with USA Cycling. When entering a USA Cycling Race, do not use our "club name", but use our abbreviated "team name" which is "Rocket Sports-Trek".
I will send out a separate email on how to apply for a USA Triathlon license (they are different national governing body, with different rules).
